Caving, Climbing and Abseiling in the Wye Valley

Caving in the Wye Valley

Caving in Wye Valley

Caves are one of the most fascinating environments known to man where it is still possible to participate in original exploration, and going caving is an exciting and exhilarating experience.   There are opportunities in the Wye Valley to experience some really excellent caving.

The sport can be extremely dangerous so please make sure you use a recognised club or firm who have experienced cave leaders.   If you have never been caving or are new to the activity then membership of a club is essential both for cave access and more importantly, SAFETY.   There are a number of reputable clubs operating in the area as follows:

The British Caving Association

Gloucester Speleological Society – a small friendly caving group in the Forest of Dean

Royal Forest of Dean Caving Club

The following firms all offer caving and/or potholing activities:

Climbing in the Wye Valley

The Wye Gorge is particularly noted for impressive cliff climbing.   Symonds Yat and Wintours Leap are particularly popular but some of the climbs can be challenging, difficult and sometimes dangerous.   Always seek expert advice from local climbing clubs or experienced individuals as not all areas are suited for climbing and some are sensitive environmental areas.
